Many millenials say they are facing a challenge for the future: great preparation and uncompetitive salaries. How do you see the future of young people in Spain after COVID?
The recovery of employment after COVID-19, which was dramatically hit during this crisis caused by the pandemic, depends on many factors, but especially health and economic ones. Spain has the opportunity to reduce several chronic weaknesses in the labor market by using best practices from other EU countries. We should look to the future of the Spanish economy with optimism, the outlook for the economy has improved. The measures being taken to improve the situation depend mostly on public health strategies and fiscal support. However, for those countries that depend on tourism, we face a longer recovery ahead and the recovery will continue to be very vulnerable.
One thing is clear: if we really want to promote economic recovery, it is essential to boost recruitment. Another measure to take into account in times of difficulty is to link wages to productivity. Promoting the integration of young people into the labor market and improving their situation are two of the Spanish government’s main priorities. Of all the effects of the economic crisis, youth unemployment is one of the most worrying. The crisis has contributed to worsening the situation of young people’s access to the labor market. The Strategy must improve the employability of young people, increase the quality and stability of employment, promote equal opportunities in access to the labor market and encourage entrepreneurship. The labor market will have to wait a few years to return to pre-crisis levels.
In conclusion, we must consider where young people have more job opportunities. Perhaps studying specialized training or a postgraduate degree are ways of acquiring new knowledge that will increase the chances of accessing the labor market with a higher probability of success. The main problem for employers is to find specialized profiles that can meet the challenges of organizations, due to the absence of such professionals in the labor market. Companies cannot dedicate long periods of time for the candidate to adapt to the position, that is why people with a more specialized profile and with training more adapted to new trends will achieve better results when it comes to accessing the labor market and will do so with better remuneration.
Is vocational training more practical for companies? What are the shortcomings of university training that vocational training is taking on?
From my point of view, the most important thing is to adapt the training that young people receive to the real needs of the labor market and also to improve guidance and information on job search and job opportunities.
As for the best areas to find work, and where the focus is being placed on the most practical vocational training for companies, I would highlight technology and digital, since the highest rate of job placement is in this discipline.
The jobs that will be most in demand are a function of the changes occurring in the population; more specialized talent is now being sought. The constant evolution of the labor market today will cause that in 2021 and 2022 job demands will turn towards some branches that until now had not enjoyed so much importance. Branches such as Health, administration and finance, human resources and digital professions and technologies will enjoy an increasing prominence in the present and near future, which is why more practical training is required for companies that will have to take on both FP and university training to achieve the profile of the most sought-after young people who no longer respond to having only average and/or generalist knowledge.
We observe a labor market that seeks personnel with knowledge of several languages, preferably English as a second foreign language, results-oriented profiles are sought, with problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate and work as part of a team. In addition, occupations where constant innovation is required are growing. All these skills must be trained in both vocational training and university education.
As an expert in Human Resources, what advice and general guidelines do you give to access the labor market after COVID?
The culture and organization of companies has changed. The concept of “the same job for life” is disappearing and the difference in employability between young people who have an online personal brand and those who do not will be accentuated.
Digital transformation is synonymous with innovation, and with it, new ways of attracting and retaining talent. Recruiters use social networks to attract talent.
Specialized and quality academic training and knowledge of languages, which used to be a competitive advantage, are now essential to access the labor market with guarantees of success.
Companies today also require personal leadership, people who are capable of leading themselves in order to lead, from the inside out and with the ability to adapt to constant change.
Among the characteristics of the ideal candidate for organizations, the capacity to innovate and the ability to turn a difficulty into a challenge or possibility are currently relevant. Specialization, as we have already mentioned, is another required value, since profiles that add value to the company in a short period of time and with high technical knowledge as well as “soft skills” are increasingly valued.
